Getting started with Wrapt for YNAB

Wrapt for YNAB works through Claude: you ask in a chat, and it reads and changes your YNAB plans for you. These steps set up every feature for a new account. Most are one sentence to Claude; the ones you skip are asked about the first time they matter.

  1. Install the connector and the Skill

Follow the install steps. Do it on a computer, on claude.ai in a web browser, as phones can block the sign-in window. When you add the connector you will:

Then upload the Skill, which tells Claude how to use the connector.

  2. Let clear-cut receipts go straight in

In claude.ai, open the connector's settings and set add_receipt to Always allow. A receipt that is clear-cut (a card Claude knows, the store's usual category, no likely duplicate) then goes into YNAB unapproved without asking, for you to approve there. Everything else still shows you a preview first.

  3. Choose your reimbursement flags

Wrapt for YNAB tracks purchases someone will pay back with a YNAB flag. Tell Claude which color means waiting to be paid back, and which it should become once paid back (or that the flag should be removed):

I use purple for reimbursements, and clear the flag when they're paid back.

Until you choose, nothing counts as a reimbursement, and Claude asks the first time one comes up. The choice is for the plan, so everyone sharing it uses the same colors.

  4. Set up emailed receipts

You have your own address for forwarding receipts, such as order confirmations. Ask for it:

What's my address for emailing receipts?

Forward receipts to it by hand from the email you signed in with; they go into your default plan, unapproved. To forward from another address too, or to send them to another plan, say so:

I also forward receipts from me@work.example.

Online receipts often don't show the card. To have those entered anyway, name the account they should go to; otherwise they wait for you:

If an emailed receipt has no card, put it on my Visa.

  5. Cards: nothing to do yet

The first time a receipt shows a card's last four digits that Claude doesn't know, it asks which YNAB account that is, and remembers it for the plan.

  6. Try it
